INDEPENDENT DOCUMENTARY WORK

Not every photograph is commissioned

Some photographs are made for clients and publications. Others begin because a moment, a place or a change in society deserves to be documented anyway.

This page helps make that independent work possible.

WHY THIS EXISTS?

Independent work begins where the assignment ends.

Commissioned work sustains the practice. Independent work creates room for stories that exist beyond a client brief, an editorial deadline or a single news cycle.

It allows me to return to the same places, follow changes over time and photograph subjects that may never become breaking news, but still deserve a visual record.

This work focuses on public space, human behaviour, technology, work, protest, isolation and the quieter tensions of contemporary life.

Contributions support PIKSIWORK’s independent documentary photography, including fieldwork, research, project-related travel, editing, archiving and publication. Contributions are voluntary, do not include a product or image licence, and are not charitable donations for tax purposes.

“One-time support is charged once. Monthly support can be cancelled at any time. Payments are processed securely.”

WHAT SUPPORT MAKES POSSIBLE?

Time, independence and continuity. Independent documentary work requires more than the moment in which a photograph is made. Support contributes to the full process behind the images.

FIELDWORK
Time spent photographing in public space, at demonstrations, in workplaces and wherever social change becomes visible.

RESEARCH & TRAVEL

Preparation, conversations and travel connected with stories that require more than a single visit.

EDITING & SEQUENCING
Selecting, refining and arranging photographs into coherent visual narratives rather than isolated images.

ARCHIVING & PUBLISHING
Preserving files, captions and context, and preparing stories for online publication, print and exhibition.

ONGOING WORK

A continuing record of contemporary life.

Some stories take shape in a day. Others require months or years of returning before the photographs begin to form a complete narrative.

ONGOING SERIES ↓

A continuing study of how screens, devices and digital systems shape behaviour in public space.

Unscripted observations of people, gestures and brief encounters in contemporary European cities.

My independent work follows recurring themes rather than isolated spectacle: modern Europe, public space, algorithmic work, technology, protest, urban loneliness and everyday human behaviour.

The meaning of these photographs often develops slowly - through repeated observation, changes in place and the accumulation of details that would otherwise disappear unnoticed.

A documentary exploration of the quieter tensions surrounding public events, institutions and everyday life.

A long-term record of platform labour, delivery work and the people operating inside systems shaped by applications and algorithms.

THE PHOTOGRAPHER

Photographed by Črt Piksi.

I am a Ljubljana-based professional photographer with more than ten years of experience in documentary, editorial and commissioned photography.

I previously worked as a photojournalist for Delo, one of Slovenia’s leading newspapers, and received the Delo Photo of the Year award in 2022.

My independent practice focuses on contemporary Europe, public space, human behaviour, technology, work and the quieter tensions of everyday life.
